The Two Layers Every Good Driveway Needs

A solid gravel driveway is not one big pile of stone. It is two layers, each doing a different job.

  • Granular B (the base): Larger, coarser stone. It carries the load and drains water away from the surface.
  • Granular A (the top): Smaller, crushed stone with fines. It locks together, compacts tight, and gives you a smooth driving surface.

You lay Granular B first, compact it, then add Granular A on top and compact again. This layering is the difference between a driveway that lasts a decade and one that fails in two years.

Recommended Depths

Depth depends on your soil and how much traffic the driveway sees. That said, here are the depths we use most often on rural jobs.

  • Granular B base: 150 to 200 mm (6 to 8 inches) after compaction.
  • Granular A surface: 75 to 100 mm (3 to 4 inches) after compaction.

For a firm, well-drained subgrade, the lower end works fine. However, soft, wet, or clay-heavy ground needs more. On those sites, we often add a woven geotextile fabric under the base and bump the Granular B up to 250 mm or more.

Because compaction shrinks loose stone, always order a little extra. We plan for roughly 20 to 25 percent shrinkage between loose and compacted material.

How to Do the Driveway Gravel Calculator Math

Here is the simple version anyone can run at the kitchen table. You need three numbers: length, width, and depth.

Work in metres for the easiest math. Follow these steps.

  1. Measure length and width of the driveway in metres.
  2. Convert your depth from millimetres to metres (for example, 150 mm = 0.15 m).
  3. Multiply all three: length × width × depth = cubic metres of gravel.
  4. Repeat for each layer because Granular A and Granular B have different depths.
  5. Add the layers together for your total volume.

To convert cubic metres to tonnes, multiply by roughly 2.1, since a cubic metre of compacted granular weighs about 2.1 tonnes. Most local suppliers, including us, sell and deliver by the tonne.

A Worked Example

Say you have a country driveway 60 metres long and 3.5 metres wide. Here is how the numbers shake out.

  • Base (Granular B) at 0.15 m: 60 × 3.5 × 0.15 = 31.5 cubic metres.
  • Surface (Granular A) at 0.075 m: 60 × 3.5 × 0.075 = 15.75 cubic metres.
  • Total volume: about 47 cubic metres.

Now convert to tonnes: 47 × 2.1 ≈ 99 tonnes. Add a bit for compaction and edge spillage, and you would order roughly 110 to 120 tonnes.

How Soft or Clay Subgrades Change the Spec

Not every yard sits on firm ground. Many rural properties around Frontenac County have low, wet spots or heavy soils that hold water.

On soft ground, gravel sinks and disappears if you skip the prep. Because of that, we usually do a few extra things.

  • Strip out soft topsoil and organics before any gravel goes down.
  • Lay a woven geotextile fabric to separate the subgrade from the stone.
  • Increase the Granular B base depth to spread the load.
  • Build in proper crown and ditching so water runs off, not through.

These steps add cost up front. However, they prevent the constant re-gravelling that soft ground otherwise demands. In the long run, doing it right once is cheaper.

Watch for Drainage and Floodplain Rules

If your driveway crosses a ditch, a watercourse, or a low floodplain area, check the rules before you dig. Local conservation authorities regulate work near water and in floodplains. You can review permit and floodplain information through Conservation Ontario.

The gravel math changes depending on your starting point. A brand-new driveway needs both layers from scratch on prepared ground.

A resurface is different. If your base is still solid, you may only need a fresh top layer of Granular A. That cuts your volume and your cost.

However, if the old driveway is full of potholes and soft spots, patching the surface will not fix it. In that case, we usually reshape the base and rebuild properly.
