This design depends on good ground. You need enough clean, unsaturated soil below the pipes for the effluent to filter through safely. Because of that, a conventional bed works best on deep, well-draining sites. When the ground cooperates, it is the design we recommend first.

When a conventional bed works

  • Deep native soil above bedrock, usually well over a metre.
  • A low water table that sits well below the leaching pipes.
  • Good percolation, so effluent moves through the ground at a healthy rate.
  • Enough room to meet all the required setbacks from wells, lot lines, and water.

When your lot ticks those boxes, you save money and keep maintenance simple. However, plenty of rural properties around here do not tick them. That is where the raised bed comes in.

What a raised bed septic system in Ontario is

A raised bed septic system in Ontario, often called a mound system, sits partly or fully above the natural ground. Instead of relying on shallow native soil, the contractor builds up a bed of imported sand and fill. The effluent then filters through that engineered material before it reaches the ground below.

These systems usually need a pump chamber too. Because the bed sits higher than the tank, a pump pushes the effluent up into the raised bed. So a raised bed septic system has more moving parts than a gravity-fed conventional one. That matters for both cost and long-term care.

Why so many Frontenac County lots need one

Our region has a lot of thin soil sitting over bedrock. It also has spots with high water tables, especially near wetlands, lakes, and low ground. Both conditions can rule out a conventional bed. In those cases, a raised bed septic system in Ontario is often the only compliant choice.

Maintenance differences you should plan for

A conventional gravity bed has almost nothing to break. You pump the tank on schedule and keep heavy traffic off the bed. That is largely it. A raised bed septic system needs a bit more attention because of the pump.

Pumps have alarms, floats, and controls. They wear over time, so they need occasional checks and eventual replacement. You also want to keep the mound covered with healthy grass and free of deep-rooted trees. Because of the pump, we recommend a service check every year or two.

Both systems share the same golden rules, though. Never drive over the bed. Do not plant a garden on it. Keep downspouts and surface water away from it. In short, protect the bed and it will protect you.

Permits and approvals in Frontenac County

Before installation, your system needs a permit. In this area, the local municipal or township building department issues on-site sewage permits. In the city, that means City of Kingston Building Services. You can start with the City of Kingston website, or your township office for rural addresses.
